about

Garbage Man was recorded in Yogyakarta, Central Java, Indonesia in 2009-2010. It is the culmination of many years studying Indonesian arts and culture as part pf an Anthropology degree. The final year of that degree was spent studying Ethnomusicology at Monash University, specialising in Asian music and especially Traditional Indonesian Gamelan. In 1999 I performed with the Monash Gamelan Orchestra at Blackwood Hall playing the 'Saron', a Metallophone with several bronze bars suspended over a resonating frame (Rancak). This is the main instrument that features on three songs on this album. In 2009 I was invited by Cassandra Lehman-Schultz, with a number of other artists to participate in 'The Museum of the Unworthy' an Asialink project, supported by Arts Queensland and The Australia Indonesia Institute. This led to the recording of "Garbage Man" in 2009 and was such a thrilling and satisfying experience I decided to come back and do an album. Actually it turned out to be many albums and this is the first of them.

Most of the artists featuring on this album are graduates from 'Institut Seni Indonesia' (ISI) Indonesian Institute of Arts. All are highly accomplished specialists in their fields and I was truly humbled to be supported by such wonderful musicians, the best of the best in Indonesia.
